I am a recent college grad who wants to move out to New Jersey, but I currently live in Chicago. I'm willing to cover the expenses to relocate, but how do I let employers know this?

How do I relocate?
Anonymous
Relocating is an expensive proposition, so it's good that you are aware that you'll need to pay your own relocation expenses. You're in a bit of a catch-22, though, since you're a new grad. First, does your degree fall into one of the high-demand areas (math, science, etc.)? If so, then an employer is much more likely to be willing to do a distance interview and even fly you in for interviews. However, if you're not "hot," in this way, then an employer is more likely to look local in order to find someone quickly and to eliminate associated travel expenses.
Since you have identified NJ as your target and I am assuming you know someone there, here are a couple of ideas: - You need to begin networking immediately. Ask you connection to introduce you to some people you can talk to (informational interviews, educational interviews to learn about the area, employers, etc.). - Get on LinkedIn and start using it to figure out your degrees of connection to that area. Maximize the tool. - Target companies in NJ and begin following them on Facebook and Twitter to hear what they have to say and learn about their values, culture, etc. - Plan regular trips to NJ so you can let employers know you'll be available for face-to-face interviews (they're likely to do the initial screening via telephone). - Make sure your cover letter clearly notes that you'll be visiting the area frequently and give a few upcoming dates. - Chicago is a big city and the NJ area is large. Check your Chicago connections and see if they have NJ connections. You'll be surprised. I've helped several people relocate and they all can find connections to their new home within 2-3 degrees.
Best wishes! Sharon
