I do everything humanly possible to stay relevant, both in terms of career knowledge and appearance. What are the chances that an over 50 year old entrepreneur facing the failure of a 16 year old business is going to be able to find a job in today's over crowded market. I've got not only the age thing going against me, but also the 17 year entrepreneurial history - all successful except for the last 18 months.

I think you need to think more positively than that. Don't market yourself as someone who has failed. You ran a business for 17 years. That's incredibly successful!
I would do a few things:
--Start writing. Write a handbook for your business, everything you did wrong and did right. You spend 17 years in a business, you must have learned something. If you wrote up a comprehensive guide to running your business and self-published on a site like Lulu.com or just even on a blog, you might be able to score a consulting gig or catch on with a competitor. In fact, you should spin yourself as an expert--I mean, with 17 years of experience, you're a small biz expert just as much as the next guy.
You just need a little confidence and personal branding. Check out the Path 101 Career Blog for tips on using blogs, LinkedIn, Meetup, etc to build up your personal brand. Get yourself out there. Start the small biz Meetup in your area. Work with your town's chamber of commerce. There's a lot of gov't money out there to help small businesses... you could be a community leader and work with your local gov't to run programs to help small businesses just like yours.
So, in other words, be entrepreneurial!
