Started a job 1 month ago in a non-profit got a better offer what should I do?

I am a social worker with a masters working towards my LISW. I just graduated and took the first job I was offered in a field that really interests me. I am overqualified for the position and my current company does not care about education and won't provide the supervision I need to get my LISW. I really like my co-workers and the job of case-management is going to be really easy. My college internship called and offered me a position that would place me in a supervisory role, with higher pay, with the needed supervision for my LISW but the population I would be working with really does not interest me. The higher pay is $3,600 per year more which would really help pay my student loans. My concerns are that if I quit my job of case management I will really be making it hard for them b/c by the time this other job gets going I will probably have a full caseload. I don't want to burn bridges b/c I really like my first agency but I have to look out for my best interest. I think..... Any suggestions on what to do or what thoughts I am missing? Thanks so much!

Being that you just started this job, and you have another offer on the table, you should tell your current employer about it. Tell them what you feel is lacking in the current role and why you are considering the other role.

Best case: They make changes to your current role so that it better fits what you're looking for OR they support your decision and give you their blessing to leave

Worst case: It pisses them off and they ask you to leave. Then, you go take the other position and they will forget about it eventually.

Talk to them about it.

Definitely bring it up. If they like you as much as you like them, they'll definitely try to keep you. You also now have leverage.

Just mention how you're really happy with the work you've been, but that you really need the extra money to pay for school loans and progress with your career.

Ask if there's anything you can do at your current firm to contribute or help make the difference, as you're trying to pay for rent/school, and that you don't want to miss out on the opportunity.

That way, you're clearly demonstrating interest, but also that the benefits are necessary to continue. If they're unable to accomodate, you've also pretty much done everything you can to stay at your job. I highly doubt that would burn any bridges, ask to stay in touch as well.

I agree I would be honest and talk to your current employer about it. If money is the only difference and you really enjoy your work, truly think if this new company is really right for you based on all of the other areas: benefits, culture, career pathing, etc.

I second the advice of everyone above that you should talk to your current employer about the other offer. I would also add, though, that you should go in with a clear sense of what you want, and what a Plan B would look like. Think through how much more your current job would need to offer to keep you, and if they can't offer more money, what other incentives might mean that you would want to stay. For example, if they can't give you a raise to match what you'd be earning elsewhere, would they offer you more time off a year? Or a smaller raise now but a commitment to revisit salary in 6 months. Since you have recently finished school, starting off working with the population that you want is a big plus, so would definitely consider that when making your decision. Also, congratulations for having two viable options! Good luck!
