I am currently in the 2nd year of my Business Management degree, minoring in Hotel Management. I currently work part-time as a senior food waiter in a good restaurant. Should I look to get promoted within the restaurant I currently work at, or apply for a job at a major hotel?

Your doing the right thing by getting practical experience, in the trenches, along with your degree. Hotels are great for your future. They usually have other locations which opens possibilities of geographical transfer. If you are going to hotels, make sure you expose yourself to unions as well. Good luck and please contact me if you have any other questions!
[permalink]The economic situation we are currently enjoying has created a limited job market in hotels at the moment. Not only is your restaurant experience a plus, but the major markets are full of excellent restaurant groups that will give you the training and experience hotels will be looking for in the future when the market recovers. Stay with your current job and look to move up, gain expertise and improve your stature in the industry . . . it will reap dividends. Good Luck!
