The scope of the field is directed at affecting "all aspects of the users interaction with the product: how it is perceived, learned, and used."

Typical tasks:

  • Review processing schedules and production orders to make decisions concerning inventory requirements, staffing requirements, work procedures, and duty assignments, considering budgetary limitations and time constraints.
  • Hire, train, evaluate, and discharge staff, and resolve personnel grievances.

  • Develop system engineering, software engineering, system integration, or distributed system architectures.

  • Investigate product characteristics such as the product's safety and handling qualities, its market appeal, how efficiently it can be produced, and ways of distributing, using and maintaining it.
